What do you get when you fuse the headiness of kosmische with the visceral impact of techno, the intensity of metal with the churning power of dark ambient? The answer can be found in Timo Timo Kaukolampi’s discography.
Having co-founded K-X-P (whose albums are critically acclaimed by Pitchfork, MOJO, and The Quietus), Kaukolampi has released four albums with the experimental electronic trio.
Though his solo material draws on a wellspring of influences from the 1970s Berlin school to minimalist masters like Éliane Radigue, it all sounds thrillingly new. Starkly beautiful instrumental pieces are layered with bassy depths and glittering peaks, with networks of mazy, centre-less electronic pathways – has music ever sounded this pulverising?
For an artist with such a keen ear for atmosphere, it’s unsurprising how comfortably he took to soundtracking. Often collaborating with fellow K-X-P member Tuomo Puranen, the pair notably created “synth-heavy” accompaniment for both TV and film, even winning a Jussi award for Best Original Score in 2018 (for Euthanizer).
With more solo material inbound, another K-X-P album under construction, and yet more soundtrack work, in the end Kaukolampi’s output is testament not only to work ethic, but tireless creative spirit.
“Timo Kaukolampi’s second solo LP is a twinkling array of detuned drones, sparse polyrhythms and cinematic ambience. Its heady mix of blurred techno and pitch-black prog is as intense as it is immersive.” ★★★★ -MOJO
“For Blade Runner 2049, composer Hans Zimmer created a dense electronic soundtrack that was ominously futuristic and hung over the film as a driving presence. Timo Kaukolampi, the frontman of Finnish space-trance heavies K-X-P, mines a similar vibe on his solo debut, but occasionally amps it up with a relentless Krautrock pulse. It’s compulsive and hypnotic.
