We Jazz 2020 will be cancelled due to updated covid restrictions. All purchased tickets are available for refund via Tiketti.

Helsinki’s Regional State Administrative Agency has just announced new covid prevention strategies and restrictions wherein the maximum number of attendees in any public event is limited to 20 people starting 23 November and ending 13 December. In light of these new restrictions, we’re sad to inform you that the 2020 edition of We Jazz Festival will have to be cancelled.

As the mayor of Helsinki states: “This is a restriction, not only a recommendation.” The safety and well-being of all involved is our top priority and the We Jazz organisation understands and fully respects these new restrictions set in motion today. “There is, after all, a future post-covid, and I trust that when we get there eventually, we can get together again to share something beautiful”, says the artistic director of We Jazz, Matti Nives.

Purchased tickets are available for refund until 20 January 2021 via Tiketti and we will also contact all ticket holders by email. If you wish, you can also choose not to return your ticket in order to support the We Jazz Team in this challenging situation. Read more here: http://www.tiketti.fi/en/info/returning.

Stay safe friends and see you on the other side,

“Speak Low II” by Lucia Cadotsch is the Jazz Album of the Month at The Guardian

The upcoming We Jazz Records LP “Speak Low II” by Lucia Cadotsch is the Jazz Album of the Month at The Guardian. Lucia Cadotsch Speak Low performs live at We Jazz 2020 in Helsinki Nov 29.

Berlin-based Swiss vocalist Lucia Cadotsch will release her long-awaited second album “Speak Low II” Nov 27 on We Jazz Records. UK newspaper The Guardian picked the upcoming release as their Jazz Album of the Month. John Fordham writes: “Speak Low II foregrounds Cadotsch’s crystal-clear lyricism more than its predecessor without ever cramping the freedoms of her classy improvising partners. She brings a graceful accessibility to a personal and ingeniously offbeat setup.” Read Fordham’s review here.

“Speak Low II” features Cadotsch on voice, Otis Sandsjö (of Y-OTIS) on tenor saxophone and Petter Eldh (of Koma Saxo) on double bass, and introduces guest artists Kit Downes on hammond organ and Lucy Railton on cello. The celebrated trio unit will also invite the ECM-recording artist Kit Downes to join them on stage at We Jazz Festival in Helsinki Nov 29.

We are excited to add one more act to the We Jazz 2020 lineup. The program is now complete as the Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love joins forces with guitarist Raoul Björknheim live at Kuudes Linja on Friday 4 December. Both are household names in the European free jazz and experimental music scene, having played and performed with the likes of Edward Vesala Sound & Fury, William Parker, Mats Gustafsson and Peter Brötzmann. The concert also features a performance by Timo Lassy Trio feat. Reiska Laine.

Tickets are available via Tiketti.

“Nilssen-Love is one of the most innovative, dynamic and versatile drummers in jazz!” – DownBeat Magazine

“Björkenheim’s guitar pyrotechnics blend virtuosity and versatility with a keen sense of abstraction”. – All About Jazz

“Raoul Bjorkenheim’s guitar work represents a mature extension of his presence as a leading guitarist in the Finnish and European experimental jazz and free improvisation movement. Volunteer application for We Jazz 2020 is now open

The 8th edition of the annual We Jazz Festival presents a selection of inspiring jazz music on 29 November – 5 December. Both foreign and domestic artists spread around Helsinki to perform at eleven exciting venues.

Our volunteers are an important part of the festival team. Volunteer tasks include building and decorating the venues, ticket and merchandise sales, assistance in catering, instructing our visitors and cleanup after the gig. If you are at least 18 years old and full of positive energy please fill in the application below and come join us at Helsinki’s largest jazz festival!

Apply HERE.

Volunteering at We Jazz festival is unpaid and gratuitous. Our volunteers can take the amount of shifts they decide, and the shifts are 7 hours long on average. As a thank you we offer our volunteers admission to selected We Jazz concerts, a We Jazz shirt, a light meal during the volunteer shifts and an afterparty when the festival is over. All volunteers will be briefed for their tasks, and it is possible to receive a volunteering reference.

We Jazz is committed to work towards a more equal and fair world. Everyone is welcome as they are, and we will not tolerate any kind of discrimination. As our volunteers are an important part of the We Jazz crew, we require that they also commit to these values. We also ask all our volunteers to commit to agreed shifts.

As the COVID-19 situation is currently fluctuating, we do not know how things will be in December. That being said, we will do everything necessary to provide a safe event environment for our staff, volunteers, artists and visitors. We will pay attention to safe distances, minimazing crowds and lines where people stand close to each other, and good hand hygiene

The volunteer application is open until Sunday 1 November, after which we will contact all the applicants personally.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us:

JAF Trio added to We Jazz 2020 program, media accreditation is now open

JAF Trio, the young Finnish-Danish band of sax player Adele Sauros, bassist Joonas Tuuri and drummer Frederik Emil Bülow will perform live at We Jazz 2020 on December 2. The power trio won the “We Jazz Rising Star” accolade at We Jazz Festival back in 2017 and now they present music from their lauded We Jazz debut album at Hakola’s “loft jazz” setting. The concert also features a solo performance by bassist Ville Herrala. Tickets to Hakola Shop are available at Tiketti.

Media accreditation for We Jazz Festival is open until November 15. Apply here.

“JAF Trio’s eponymous debut outing is filled with tight drumbeats, striding bass walks and quirky sax lines sliding down slippery slopes.” – All About Jazz

“The trio isn’t concerned with revolution, but rather finding its place within a hallowed tradition. The pleasure is direct and unadulterated.” – The Quietus

“Finnish-Danish act JAF Trio have made their debut with one of the most technically articulate and stylistically nuanced jazz records in recent memory.” – GIGSoup

“There’s kinetic energy throughout the album which makes for compelling listening.” – UK Vibe

“JAF Trio’s self titled album has a real of sense tightness and clarity.” – Backseat Mafia

Tapani Rinne celebrates his new album at We Jazz Festival on 3 December

Reedsman Tapani Rinne is probably best known as a leader of the pioneering techno-jazz group RinneRadio whose mix of meditative jazz motifs and electronica has been welcomed with open arms all over the globe. Rinne visits We Jazz Festival to celebrate his forthcoming solo album ”Foghornia”, released on Signature Dark label in October. His new solo work picks up where the previous left off, continuing to experiment with bass clarinet and electronics, diving even deeper into more melancholic depths of dark ambient music.

More additions to the festival program will be announced during the autumn. The additional performance for the Hakola Shop concert will be released on 30 September, and the additional performance for the Kuudes Linja concert 14 October. Visitors for the Superposition Festival will also be revealed during the fall.

The safety and well-being of the audience, performers and staff is a top priority for the organizers of We Jazz Festival. The We Jazz team closely monitors the development of the pandemic situation and will do everything to provide a safe event environment for everybody involved.

Tickets to Helsinki Contemporary are available at Tiketti.

“The downtempo project of Finland’s Tapani Rinne, perhaps the world’s only techno bass clarinetist, is hard to stop listening to… There is something to be gained by melding the organic reed with the cool computer, it is a lonely northern forest sound unheard before now.”
– David Rothenberg / New York Times
