The opening concert will take place on the Main Stage of the Finnish National Theatre. Sax man Timo Lassy will present a Finnish/German collaborative ensemble together with trumpeter Sebastian Studnitzky. The band also appeared in Berlin at the new We Jazz/XJazz produced Scope Festival in Berlin in November.

Jukka Eskola Soul Trio will be the first band to perform at the Opening concert, celebrating their new release on the Grotto X We Jazz series.


The evening’s proceedings will begin with M.A. Numminen, who continues the surprising tradition of his opening performances, which will this time around probably also include special guests.

The great Mark Turner Quartet makes their way to Helsinki. The band made a strong statement with the 2014 ECM release “Lathe of Heaven” and it is expected that their performance at the atmospheric surroundings of the Andorra Film Theatre will be one of the highlights this year. The performance also marks the welcome return of trumpeter Avishai Cohen, who performed at We Jazz two years ago with his own group. The concert is presented in collaboration with Sibelius Academy.

Monday night jazz will continue at Dubrovnik, a venue which has become a We Jazz favourite over the past couple of years. Dunstan is Blue Note recording sax man Logan Richardson plus Finnish scene stalwarts, drummer Teppo Mäkynen and bassist Antti Lötjönen. They will celebrate their first release, a vinyl 10″ on the Grotto X We Jazz series.


The young trio Katu Kaiku plays first and We Jazz DJs offer some tasty jazz on vinyl to seal the deal.

Wednesday night begins at the newly-opened Riviera Cinema Bar with a screening of “Space Is the Place”, the 1974 psychedelic blaxpliotation-tinged cosmic classic portraying the world views of the one and only Sun Ra. Entrance is free to anyone holding at ticket to any of the We Jazz festival concerts. Tickets also available at the door for 9 eur.

The Wednesday night concert will feature two wonderful band from (mostly) Berlin. Amok Amor is the trio of Slavin-Eldh-Lillinger with the US trumpet great Peter Evans.


“Speak Low” is a Berlin-based project by Swiss vocalist Lucia Cadotsch, Swedish saxophone man Otis Sandsjö and German bassist Petter Eldh. Their music is “acoustic retro-futurism”.


This concert is presented in co-operation with Goethe-Institut Finnland, Pro Helvetia / Schweizer Kulturstiftung and Vapaat äänet.

Rising star Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö performs in a special setting with Finnish musicians selected together with the We Jazz production team. Sandsjö will be joined by pianist and experimental electronic musician Aki Rissanen, and Tomi Leppänen, the drummer of KXP and Aavikko. This trio has ammunition galore, and they will use it for the good of all those within an earshot.

Magnetia Orkesteri is sax man Pauli Lyytinen plus fellow Finnish A-list talents Verneri Pohjola, Eero Tikkanen and Mika Kallio. Their music is a potent mix of free playing and memorable compositions.


Buba Wii Aa is a solid organ-bass-drums combo of up-and-coming players. The band has already wooed audiences all over the place, including XJazz Berlin and a tour of art galleries in Finland.

The Saturday night at We Jazz will take place at Lapinlahden Lähde, once a mental institution housing also luminaries such as the famed Finnish writer Aleksis Kivi. Now, his used-to-be room will be taken over by a group of artists each taking turns in turning his diagnosis into a series of solo improvisations.


The evening will begin with Jukka Perko Avara, drawing from their celebrated ACT Music release “Invisible Man”.


The go-getting big band Mikko Sarvanne Hip Company and unpredictable vocalist Beibi P present their magnum opus “Muovibabylon” as a live performance and an installation.


Guitarist-composer Markus Pesonen will come over from Berlin to bring us “Wateristic”, an audiovisual study on water.
