Vijay Iyer Trio (US)

Teddy’s West Coasters

M. A. Numminen

The hottest name in jazz right now Vijay Iyer is bringing his trio to Helsinki for We Jazz. We’re bound to hear material from the recent awesome album Break Stuff. The trio’s music is minimalistic and hypnotic all at once.

Teppo Mäkynen’s Teddy’s West Coasters don’t play gigs very often. Their performance at We Jazz will be their second one since debut album Volume 1 was released. West Coasters features some of Finland’s top jazz artists and it’s wonderful to experience how they interpret Mäkynen’s music together on stage.

M. A. Numminen is one of Finland’s most respected artists. At the We Jazz opening concert we will once again get to experience Numminen’s traditional opening perfomance, the contents of which can be anything at all.

Valtteri Pöyhönen

Laura Annika Quartet

We Jazz DJs

Drummer Jaska Lukkarinen’s trio takes on a new challenge: during We Jazz they will be playing music by composer Valtteri Pöyhönen arranged for a trio. The concert will be recorded live for a possible future record. It will be interesting to see how tracks made for bands like six person Dalindèo or the huge Ricky Tick Big Band are repurposed for a trio. The composer Pöyhönen will also be a part of the performance with the trio acting as his instrument.

Singer Annika Mustonen leads her quartet which plays vocal jazz with a distinctive touch. They recently released the wonderful EP Le Lac and are a group in Finnish jazz worth keeping an eye on.

The We Jazz DJ collective consists of Eero Löyttyjärvi and Matti Nives with occasional visits by friends. Their record bag is filled with jazz sounds from the beginning of the genre to this day with a special focus on the raw sound of 60’s club jazz. Löyttyjärvi can be hard on Saturdays between 2 and 4 PM on Bassoradio’s programme Lauantaijazzit. Nives is one of the hosts of Jazz kiinnostaa, which can be heard every Sunday at noon on Radio Helsinki.

We Jazz DJs

German and European jazz legend Gunter Hampel arriving at We Jazz is a great and important occasion. The group which focuses heavily on collective creation features Brazilian dancer Danilo Cardoso and the concert is bound to be a very comprehensive experience. This lineup also performs under the name Gunter Hampel Music + Dance Improvisation Company. The visit is carried out in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Finnland.

Pianist Aki Rissanen takes a turn into the world of electronic avantgarde music on his new concept album Sturm. The acoustic piano is ever present in the sound and mood of the album which is a fascinating combination of  different worlds. The live concept will be carried out with visualisations that not only envelop the venue but extend outside as well.

The Genelec House loft jazz-evening will be host to the first ever We Jazz jam session. This is going to be interesting.

Timo Lassy Band

Teemu Åkerblom Quartet

We Jazz DJs

Timo Lassy Band is one of the most popular Finnish jazz bands for a reason. The quintet led by sax player Lassy consist of the crème de la crème of domestic jazz and functions as a single unit, living and breathing one big musical vision. The band can swing and their music is both deep and bold. This gig features guest appearences by artists from the hit album Love Bullet.

Bass player Teemu Åkerblom and his quartet released their debut album just in time for We Jazz. The band is full of talented next generation jazz musicians and Åkerblom’s vision is deep yet simultaneously rhythmically oriented. One might use the term spiritual jazz.

The We Jazz DJ collective consists of Eero Löyttyjärvi and Matti Nives with occasional visits by friends. Their record bag is filled with jazz sounds from the beginning of the genre to this day with a special focus on the raw sound of 60’s club jazz.
